A link between the hippocampal and the striatal memory systems of the brain Anais da ABC (AABC)
Rossato,Janine I.; Zinn,Carolina G.; Furini,Cristiane; Bevilaqua,Lia R.M.; Medina,Jorge H.; Cammarota,Martín; Izquierdo,Iván.
Two major memory systems have been recognized over the years (Squire 1987): the declarative memory system, which is under the control of the hippocampus and related temporal lobe structures, and the procedural or habit memory system, which is under the control of the striatum and its connections. Most if not all learning tasks studied in animals, however, involve either the performance or the suppression of movement; this, if learned well, may be viewed as having become a habit. It is agreed that memory rules change from their first association to those that take place when the task is mastered. Does this change of rules involve a switch from one memory system to another? Here we will comment on: 1) reversal learning in the Morris water maze (MWM), in...

A nidificação de Pionus maximiliani (Kuhl) e Ara maracana (Vieillot) em Gália São Paulo, Brasil (Aves, Psittacidae) Zoologia
Carvalho,Cory T. de; Carvalho,José.
Nests of the "Scaly-headed parrot" and "Illiger's macaw" - Pionus maximiliani (Kuhl, 1820) and Ara maracana (Vieillot, 1816) - found at the Ecological Station in Gália, São Paulo with clutches in 26-VII-90 and 20-IX-90, both containing four white rounded and at one end slightly pointed eggs, measuring 33.4x30.0mm and 33.0x28.0mm each respectively, are being reported on. The incubation in the "Scaly-headed parrot" lasted for 26 days, the stay of the young in the nest cavity for about 50 days and only one adult was seen incubating, while in "Illiger's or Blue-winged macaw" both parents used to stay in the nest.

A revision of New World Brontaea Kowarz (Diptera, Muscidae) Zoologia
Carvalho,Claudio José Barros de; Pont,Adrian Charles.
Five species of Brontaea Kowarz (=Gymnodia Robineau-Desvoidy, preocc.) occur in the New World. B. humilis (Zetterstedt) has been introduced from Europe and is known from a few localities in eastern and Pacific coast Canada and USA. B. normata (Bigot) is an endemic Neotropical species. The other species, B. debilis (Williston), B. quadristigma (Thomson) (=cilifera Malloch, syn.nov.) and B. delecta (Wulp) (=arcuata Stein) occur throughout warm and temperate areas of the Americas. They are common filth flies, and are frequently collected in faeces-baited traps. Brontaea is probably a polyphyletic genus. The species discussed here appear to be correctly placed in the subfamily Mydaeinae. An identification key. descriptions, illustrations and geographic...

An Economic-Psychological Model of Sustainable Food Consumption AgEcon
Lombardini, Chiara; Lankoski, Leena.
This paper proposes a novel economic-psychological model of individual food consumption and food waste that recognizes individuals as social and moral beings who are boundedly rational and have limited capacity for self-control. The model identifies five components of individuals’ utility that correspond to five modes of being or selves: the hedonic agent, the social agent, the moral agent, the health-conscious agent and the habits-driven agent. In the model, individuals maximize this composite utility given their budget and effort constraints. We apply the model to analyze policies that can support the adoption of sustainable food consumption practices.

Assessing U.S. Household Purchase Dynamics for Dietary Fiber AgEcon
Henry-Osorio, Miguel; Dong, Diansheng.
This study updates existing literature on consumer/household demand for fiber by examining household purchase dynamics for dietary fiber. It uses a dynamic Tobit model that allows past purchase occasions to affect current purchase decisions for fiber in a framework that captures simultaneously state dependence, unobserved households heterogeneity preferences, and serial correlation caused by a stationary first-order choice process. The model controls for the unobserved heterogeneity by adopting a Gaussian random effects specification. It also captures variations in prices over time and controls for left-censoring. The dynamic model is estimated using the Geweke-Hajivasssiliou-Keane recursive probability simulator and a unique dataset that contains detailed...

De Gustibus Asparagus: Habits, Trade, and Welfare from Out of Season Imports of Fresh Vegetables AgEcon
Ferrier, Peyton Michael; Zhen, Chen.
Fresh vegetables, including asparagus, are now available in months outside of the domestic growing season for most U.S. consumers. We use the virtual price method to calculate the equivalent variation for increased availability in a demand system for fresh and frozen vegetables and find that virtual price of out-of-season asparagus is roughly 3 times higher than its in-season price in years prior to year round availability. We find the equivalent variation between 1986-1991 (when asparagus was available approximately half the year) and 1993-1999 (when it was available year round) to be 0.91 of consumer vegetable budgets, implying a welfare benefit of approximately $86 million annually. We also find evidence of habit formation for fresh but not frozen...

New records of Uroderma magnirostrum Davis (Mammalia, Chiroptera) from southeastern Brazil, with comments on its natural history Zoologia
Nogueira,Marcelo R.; Tavares,Valéria C.; Peracchi,Adriano L..
Uroderma magnirostrum Davis, 1968 is reported from four new localities in southeastern Brazil, significantly extending its geographical distribution south and westward. A total of 12 adult specimens collected in areas of Caatinga and Atlantic Forest in the states of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, and Rio de Janeiro, including specimens from the new localities and museum specimens were examined. Females from southeastern Brazil were larger than males in all external measurements analyzed, but after univariate statistical analyses using corrected p values for multiple tests no significant sexual dimorphism was detected. Mean values obtained from this sample fall within the known range documented for the species in both external and cranial measurements, and...

Observations on the feeding ecology of estuarine nematodes OMA
Moens, T.; Vincx, M..
Observations on living estuarine nematodes show that previous feeding type classifications do not accurately represent the trophic structure of an intertidal mudflat in the Westerschelde Estuary (Netherlands). A new scheme with six major nematode feeding guilds is proposed: (1) microvores; (2) ciliate feeders; and (3) deposit feeders sensu stricto are all nematodes without a distinct buccal armature. In the first two groups bacteria and protozoa, respectively are the major particulate food sources, while other items are included in the diet of the third. The three other categories are recognized among the nematodes with a buccal armature: (4) epigrowth feeders; (5) facultative predators; and (6) predators. Diatoms and other microalgae are an important...
